Christmas and half term holidays were lovely and I took a total break from anything even remotely work related and immersed myself into family time. However during school time I've been pretty busy ...

Designing some new patterns to improve and extend my range.

Trying to get my head around search engine optimization.

Doing market research.

Honing my product photography skills and set up.

Considering the direction I want to take my business in and breaking it down into small steps.

Emptying my workroom, rearranging all the furniture and making it more workable.

Today it's finally time to get to the sewing machine and get creative with lovely fabric. Yay!

It took a while to get it just right but I've made around 15 purses with it so far and there'll be many more to follow. This Mr Fox purse was the first successful one I made...
Wow! About 3 years has passed since my last post and it's been one hell of an eventful rollercoaster ride during that time! However, I'm back...

I'm in the midst of sorting out my new sewing room, which is nearly complete, I'll show you around it when it's finished. It's only the box room but it should be more than adequate to get me started.

Isn't she lovely? She is just how I imagined in my head except for one small thing. The choice of fabric was a slight compromise. It is exactly the right colour to match with the red wall but I would have liked white hearts instead of spots as there are already hearts featuring strongly in the decor of this room. I did find the perfect fabric online but you never know exactly what colour something will be when buying online and reds can be funny to match. So I'm going to keep a swatch in my purse and if I happen to come across the exact right fabric I will get it and make new curtains and re-purpose the spotty ones. So pleased with it though, I just need to put everything away now so that the room can be used again and I can get on with other sewing for Belovedly. Not bad for a grand total of £35 eh?

However, they are on hold for a few days.

I bought a beautiful yet dilapidated display cabinet today which I'm in the process of giving a new lease of belovedly life. So far I've only removed the glass (I have v.young, v.boisterous children) it needs some reinforcement at the front, a couple of plywood panels in the sides, a sand down, a few coats of paint and some fabric panels making for the little windows and then it will be even more beautiful than it is now in its worn out, faded, graffitied state. (Did I mention it was super cheap?) Anyway here it is ...

Glass removed

When I saw it I immediately knew I needed it in my life, Mr Belovedly needed some persuading but I wore him down in the end. I think he was getting hungry and realised I wasn't going home without it! I even agreed to get rid of one of my many beloved blanket chests as a trade off ... I'm secretly hoping he forgets about that particular part of the deal! Anyway when my cabinet is finished it will be used to store all the bits and bobs from Belovedly bag-making that currently reside all over the place in our dining room so Mr Belovedly will actually be a happy chappy as he is always complaining about the many homeless bits and bobs.

I think my cabinet will be so lovely that she will need a name. Normally I like things in my life to be masculine, My husband is a man, my children are boys, my car 'Bernard' is male, I have always without exception opted for male pets (okay, maybe I wasn't too sure about the gender of my fish,) other household items etc that I've named have also always been male (I'm sure I'm not the only one to do this as my husband has a plant named Stuart ... maybe that's my influence though thinking about it! Hmmm - Actually I know I'm not the only one as my sister in law had a hoover called Bob.) But to get back to my point, the cabinet is most definately a girl, she will need an old fashioned but cute name that starts with C.
Any suggestions?Alison - Belovedlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11408859422081350618noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8447144264294504108.post-33732598815733210692011-06-20T20:53:00.002+01:002011-06-20T21:09:11.191+01:00Sock Elephant Tutorial

How to make a sock elephant...

The green lines represent sewing, the pink lines represent cutting, the dotted red lines are where to do hand running stitch and pull tight and yellow lines are where to attach something.

Please refer to the photos below regularly.

You will need 2 gents socks and 1 plain ladies sock, 2 buttons, good quality thread, toy stuffing and a needle. It will be alot quicker with a sewing machine!

Step 1. Ears - Sew (green line) zigzag across the toe of each sock as shown in the first picture. Cut (pink line) as close to the zigzag sewing as you can. You now have 2 ears - put to one side for later.

Step 2. Body - Turn sock inside out. Using straight stitch sew across the elasticated opening of one of the socks and then up and down as shown in the first picture to form the separate legs. Carefully cut between the legs to separate. Turn sock right way again and stuff legs and body. The heel will form the elephants bottom. (It will take a while to get a good form when stuffing socks and it really is worth spending the time over as can't be sorted out later if its lumpy.) Hand sew a loose running stitch around the opening of the sock about 1cm down from the edge, pull it tight (I use top stitching thread for this bit to ensure strength, or you could use your thread doubled) poke the frill that forms down inside the sock, pull abit tighter and tie off very securely.

Step 3. Arms - Get the other sock, turn it inside out, sew across the elasticated part of the sock and then sew parallel lines to separate the arms. Cut across the top as shown in the first picture and cut between the parallel stitched lines to separate each arm - sorry I forgot to put that bit in the photo! Turn each arm the right way around, stuff, sew across the opening with zigzag a little way down from the edge and trim neatly.

<img border="0" height="320" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9veONVx2EXfcE-ClUZz-rvsK2r6KaXhAmvbJ59lTM47ZAo_aHcG7FyLpG1apmoZsn1HoD76f5xJGnvM4qTfa2_VGnquzDaO3nYXbDDoYkqXeLub1jvUGFIPg7fbAMBSjIfnpjoATKSV3F/s320/socks3.JPG" width="236" />

Step 4. Head - Turn sock inside out and use straight stitch to sew on the green line in the picture below to form the trunk and forehead. Cut on the pink line. Turn the right way round again. Turn up a little bit of the trunk and hand stitch around it to form a nice neat edge - N.B. You are NOT closing up the trunk just hemming it.

Step 5. Now get the ladies sock. Stuff a good sized firm ball of stuffing into the toe, about the size you want the elephant's head to be. Tie a knot in the sock next to the stuffing to close off the ball (- this stops stuffing escaping down the elephants nose and allows secure attachment of buttons for eyes.) You will have a long bit of sock with no stuffing in it - tuck this down the trunk you have sewn in the gents sock and pull the head of the gents sock over the ball in the ladies sock. Using hand running stitch sew approximately 1cm down from the edge of the opening in the gents sock, pull tight and repeat the closing up procedure as you did with the body.

<img border="0" height="320" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-MovF3NQulP_ovZPXwdKTtZwFBR62s-j4x1Oc6aBfTHHAG8IcdgxFHn9TPnOQx8KRrF2xdeMHp2EwKt0ZyDwxBZgLoMzA75B5uhnJJj6soidqHO1hKaTxPAASgHq_hEIiukhPsrO6Xp3Z/s320/socks+4.JPG" width="239" />

You are now ready to start assembling your elephant which needs to be done by hand with good quality thread, doubled.

Step 6. Sew a button on for each eye - as shown in the picture above by the yellow circle -N.B. The seam coming up from the trunk will form the shape of the forehead so you need a button each side of the seam. Then sew on the ears - as represented in the picture above by the yellow curved line.

Step 7. Sew the arms onto the body in the position you want them.

Step 8. Position the head on the body. The sock heel on the head will be the neck bit so rest this on the gathered bit of the body. Hold carefully in position whilst sewing around the neck (taking fabric from both the head and the body) in a circle attaching the head and body together. Sew around twice or three times until happy the head is securely on. Tie off securely.

Love, Love, LOVE.

Oh and give him a name :)

Hope you enjoy making your elephant. If you decide to have a go please do send me a photo! I will upload a good sized photo of a finished elephant once I've found my camera (the photos on this post were taken with my phone.) as I've had it pointed out to my that the group of elephants in my last elephant post wouldn't enlarge for some reason.
It's been a massive learning curve and I've really enjoyed making it. The front has 2 birds on a blossom tree branch appliqued on it. A pale blue bird for my eldest boy and an even paler blue bird for my youngest boy. I've used glittery flower buttons for the blossom. There are loads of pockets and it's big enough for everything I need for a full day out with my boys including a change of clothing and a few toys!

I'm really very pleased with it and am so glad I treated myself to making something for myself! It turned out exactly as I'd imagined. I've included this blog post on Wendy's Handmade Monday Blog, if you've enjoyed reading this then pop over there and see what other talented crafty types have been making this week.Alison - Belovedlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11408859422081350618noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8447144264294504108.post-61812931550946867332011-05-04T23:14:00.001+01:002011-05-04T23:16:35.905+01:00And a tiny bit more.

That's the last little glimpse you're getting until the grand unveiling which I'll be keeping for Wendy's 1st Unique Gifts Handmade Monday feature - assuming it's done by then of course - which it will be!
I am so unbelievably pleased with how my bag is going and it's even more special as it's the first bag I've actually made for myself. I have got the inside fully constructed and the outside fully constructed I basically need to just line it with 'special squidgy stiffening stuff' and then sew the liner to the outer and attach an adjustable strap. Two maybe three days and it'll be finished. I'm having to make it in fits and starts as can only sew when the boys are both asleep. I don't mind though as it really has been a labour of love and I see it as a bit of a heirloom in the making to be honest.

We had a big family Easter break at the seaside on the East Coast. It was a relative's birthday and the sun shone the whole time we were there :) I came home refreshed, did a bit of housework and a tiny bit of sewing, got the washing done and before I knew it I was watching the royal wedding and another bank holiday was upon us! Yesterday we went up to show off LB to his great grandma in the Lakes. We had a walk along the promenade and it was unbelievably windy - I do believe it blew the remaining cobwebs right out of me! My making mojo seems to have returned! Yay!
So without further ado here are a few teasers of the changing bag that I'm making ...
Cutting out takes me an age and it's now my least favourite part of sewing. I used to hate pinning pattern pieces with a passion but have now ditched the pins in favour of sewing weights. I'll be ditching scissors aswell shortly in favour of a rotary cutter. Happy sewing will soon commence!!!

You might recognise the red lining fabric, I made my sewing machine cover out of it which you can see here. The brown fabric looks like cord but isn't. It's like cord in that its velvety and arranged in stripes but it's flat with no grooves. It's got a grey stripe running through the fabric too. Apparently it's Italian. Very lovely indeedy!
I hadn't checked my stash and was going to buy some plain or polkadot red fabric for the lining but made a pledge with Lynsey of SwirlyArts/SwirlyThoughts/Cuteable that for 2 months I wouldn't buy any more craft materials. Think these fabrics go really well together though so it's worked in my favour this time!Alison - Belovedlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11408859422081350618noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8447144264294504108.post-48510941499528043192011-03-06T23:34:00.011+00:002011-03-07T00:22:20.521+00:001-2-3-Go!!!So last week for Handmade Monday I was a bit rubbish. It looks fairly straight forward for the picture but believe me it's got so many fancy pockets inside it's nearly untrue. She had quite a specific list of requirements ... it had to look right with each and every coat she owns, it had to hold her laptop and keep it in a snug position yet not look like it contained a laptop, she needed an internal pocket for this, that and the other and even more this and thats, it needed a zip to keep everything in, it needed a flap and it needed to be able to be worn on the shoulder and across the body too. She also wanted a separate pouch for her laptop to stop it getting scratched whilst not in use or in the bag.

So... I picked the tweed check as it has the colours she normally wears to work and I managed to find a really cute lining fabric with little flowers on it. I measured up her laptop and made it a pouch and a special harness inside the bag to keep it in position. On the harness is a pocket for her phone and memory stick. There is another pocket the same size on the otherside for her keys and purse and also a pocket with dividers for her hundreds of pens. The zip top was a learning curve but a very valuable one, I normally avoid zips but was determined to overcome my fear of them ... and I have. The strap is adjustable too.

She is well chuffed with it, so am I. I find working with tweed really satisfying. I love it!Alison - Belovedlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11408859422081350618noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8447144264294504108.post-69753701430154582242011-02-05T15:42:00.003+00:002011-02-05T16:14:33.216+00:00Grey clutchHere, as promised, is another project that has been half finished since before the birth of LB. I finished it the other day and finally had chance to get the flower brooch made last night and today. I used my new bigshot die cutting machine to get the shape for the flowers. It gives a really crisp neat cut and is alot quicker than cutting out by hand. What I like about putting brooches as embellishments on bags is that the customer can place it wherever they like on the bag or can remove it completely and wear it on their favourite jacket. The clutch is a gorgeous grey woollen tweed with a scarlet lining. The brooch is made from black felt, scarlet leatherette and a lovely oversized shiney black button.

Hope you like it!
xxAlison - Belovedlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11408859422081350618noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8447144264294504108.post-91839580204541332652011-02-02T14:58:00.004+00:002011-02-02T15:06:31.276+00:00Busy BeeI've been trying to finish off a few half finished projects the last week or so. Here is my first offering. It's a knotted shoulder bag in a cream fabric with a black velvety flocked brocade pattern. I just love this fabric teamed with the scarlet lining and grosgrain ribbon. I'm tempted to make a little heart brooch to affix to it in honor of Valentine's Day which is fast approaching! Just like all my other bags it has an internal pocket made from the same fabric as the outer.
Please let me know what you think ...Alison - Belovedlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11408859422081350618noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8447144264294504108.post-86182014584391253562010-12-02T16:58:00.003+00:002010-12-02T17:47:35.544+00:00Feeling festiveWell, I managed to locate the camera so here is the Christmas tree ...

The snow continued to fall overnight on and off but didn't seem to be much deeper than yesterday's 16 inches this morning. Good job really, as I had to take LB to the doctors first thing with a bad cough/cold/sneeze - nothing serious though but better safe than sorry eh! Getting there was interesting to say the least, there was no way we'd be able to get our car off the drive and had we been able to there was no way we'd manage to get it up the hill to the surgery. The buggy was a no-go too, I considered walking with the sling but quickly decided the cold air would do him more harm than good and if I fell he'd get crushed. A taxi was called and we were delivered there and back safely, albeit very slowly and with much wheel-spinning.

This afternoon during nap-time we started making an igloo for BB to play in when he woke. Tim built the walls up to start with and then I took out a brolly and we used it to support the roof. It took about 2 hours to build but the little man was incredibly pleased with it...

I just wish I could fit in it too!Alison - Belovedlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11408859422081350618noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8447144264294504108.post-58886697673030815962010-12-01T23:20:00.005+00:002010-12-02T00:03:29.559+00:00Three became FourWell, it's the 1st of December and time I started blogging again...
I had a beautiful baby boy just over 2 weeks ago, he is absolutely adorable and incredibly content. From now on I will refer to my boys as BB (Big Brother) and LB (Little Brother.)

The birth was a doddle except for dropping the gas and air in the throws of it all! BB came to visit straight away and was really quite interested and accepting of the new arrival. The first week was really tiring as the new baby was nocturnal, he has now settled down though and only wakes once during the night. BB is still very impressed about having a new baby around the house and is very affectionate and gentle with him, even though he is only 2 yrs old himself. Every morning when he comes into our bedroom one of the first things he does is go to LB's crib and gaze at him smiling before stroking his hair. It's enough to make a grown woman feel all woozy and warm ;)
We are blessed.

Over the weekend it started to snow here and now several days later we have 16 inches of the stuff - Talk about a winter wonderland! I haven't seen so much snow since I was little. BB had been enjoying it tremendously building snowmen, sledging and snowballing, until today when it was just too deep for him to walk in let alone play in. Tomorrow's plan is hopefully to build an igloo of sorts in the backgarden. On the downside our plans of seeing family and friends are having to be cancelled left, right and centre.

Today, because it was the first day in December and to make up for the fact that he had found it too hard to play in the snow, we put our Christmas tree up. It's an artifical one and he'd started putting tinsel and baubles on before I'd managed to get it half built. I have to admit that it's quite OTT this year, we put on every bauble we own and very nearly ran out of branches to adorn. I would post a picture of it but can't locate the camera so that will have to wait until tomorrow.

Right, going to post this now else it will be tomorrow!

xxAlison - Belovedlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11408859422081350618noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8447144264294504108.post-26998374528587662802010-11-05T08:18:00.004+00:002012-04-27T15:41:14.966+01:00Remember remember the 5th of November! It has been a while since I made anything to show you - appologies! I've been feeling pretty rough and tired with the birth of the new baby just round the corner.
Yesterday I had my hand forced though, it's one of my favourite nephews birthday parties today so a gift I'd had planned for a while needed to be created. I admit I was tempted to forget my plans and pop to the shops for something plastic instead, but I don't really know what boys of that age are into. I do know that he loves dinosaurs though ...

It's a dinosaur canvas for his bedroom and hopefully it will tie in with the decor quite well. The last one of these I made was a dragonfly for the birth of my cousins new baby which was nice but didn't quite end up as I had imagined. For that one I had machine sewn the felt dragonfly onto the background and I don't think it worked very well. I had wanted my stitches to be clearly visible but they just sunk into the felt and created a bit of a padded look. This time I glued the felt on with fabric glue, I think it does work alot better than the machine sewing. The next one I do I'm going to try doing running stitch around the edge by hand - my handsewing leaves alot to be desired so although it sounds like a good plan it could be a complete flop!
It's in pink and black (obviously!) upholstery fabric with a woven leather effect handle. The flower corsage with leather leaves can be pinned in any position the owner desires - even on their lapel! It will be added to my Belovedly website and Folksy and Misi shops soon. Watch this space for more in this style.

The first one is a carpet bag, my first ever one, I even made the handles myself. So as you can imagine it was a very steep learning curve. I started off by using a pattern and then ditched the pattern once I understood how to construct a bag of this type - this usually happens when I use patterns! I didn't like the way it sat and it seemed far too wide for my liking, so I changed the proportions and the shaping. It also originally had a seam along the bottom which seemed pointless to me so I altered that too. Anyway after alot of other changes that I wont bore you with the bag no longer resembles the original pattern and I'm really happy with it...

The other bag was more straight forward to finish as I've been making these knotted bags for a
while now. I love the flowery yellow fabric in this one, it reminds me of the curtains that my mum used to have up in her sewing room when I was little...
I love my machine, it's a Bernina Nova 900 and is very purdy. I don't really want to cover it up, but it permanently lives on one side of the dining room table and we eat on the other so for it's own sake it needs to be covered up now that our son is well practised in throwing food!

I couldn't be bothered to read the instructions or even to look at the patterns provided - really - how hard can it be? Not very is the answer. So I measured up, picked the fabric from my stash and set to it. I cut the fabric out on the floor instead of on the table as when I had a scan on Monday (I'm 35 weeks pregnant) they said the baby was in a very bad position and to try spending some time on all fours to try to get it moved, so it was an ideal time to do some multi-tasking!
I sewed it all up in no time at all and then decided I wanted bias binding round the bottom, but not the scratchy shop bought stuff, I wanted to make my own. I couldn't find a bias binding tape maker locally but found this amazing tutorial on how to make some myself without the need for one - and yes, it really does work :D
So here is the finished cover ...

Really pleased with it and am feeling the need to make metres and metres of pretty bias binding now that I know how!

Ali xx

Alison - Belovedlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11408859422081350618noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8447144264294504108.post-45910157693899790012010-10-10T19:55:00.005+01:002010-10-13T22:47:37.089+01:00

Welcome to my new blog :¬) not really sure what to do now I'm here but I'm sure I'll learn the ropes quickly enough!
